Council reviews budget plan

The road and transport department’s fourth quarter service delivery and budget implementation plan was reviewed at Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality's October council meeting.

In its assessment of the department’s performance, the committee considered how the department managed to achieve its targets for the quarter.

The department of roads and stormwater’s capital expenditure and the department of transport’s capital expenditure were key deliberations in the meeting. The committee welcomed the achievements in roads and stormwater after spending and utilising 97 percent of its budget on capital projects.

The committee also deliberated as to why the transport department had only utilised 81 percent of its capital expenditure and concluded that the 100 percent target will not be reached and ended instructing the department to carry over the remaining percentage to the next financial year.

A request to use in-house staff to develop its own maintenance plan for all the Ekurhuleni taxi ranks by the transport department was rejected.

The committee expressed concerns over the fact that the transport department did not give a report on their activities for the transport month of October. The department apologised to the committee and indicated that the department will inform council of its future transport activities.
