Fast reaction yields arrest

Some residents requested that Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) step up security measures while others asked for more visibility from the SAPS.

Fast reaction from police officers resulted in a man being arrested for robbing two children next to Rhodes Park.

According to Constable Mpho Mashakane, the Cleveland SAPS communications officer, a Kensington resident said his two children were attacked on their way to school by two suspects on October 24.

“They were walking close to Rhodes Park when two suspects approached them. One of the suspects had a knife. They took a cellular phone from one of the children,” said Const Mashakane.

Police officers were contacted and the children gave them a description of the suspects.

The officers went into Rhodes Park and found one of the suspects.

They searched him and found a cellular phone in his pocket matching the description the children had given.

He was arrested and detained at the Cleveland SAPS.

Several people have raised concerns over the past few months about the lack of safety in Rhodes Park. Crimes committed in the park include robberies and muggings.

Some residents requested that Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) step up security measures while others asked for more visibility from the SAPS.

The JCPZ has stepped up security by fixing fencing around the park and is looking at other ways of addressing safety. They also decided to open the park in the morning and lock it at night.

The Cleveland SAPS has made arrests for crimes committed in and around the park. Last week, Const Mashakane said the Cleveland SAPS continues to patrol the park and has increased its visibility in the hopes it will deter criminals from operating in the area.
