SAPS begins festive season operations

The station has already taken action by forming part of the cluster operation that involves the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), liquor board members and other stakeholders.

The Cleveland SAPS has already begun operations in preparation for the festive season.

Residents are urged to be vigilant as the holidays approach.

Constable Mpho Mashakane, the Cleveland SAPS communications officer, said the operations started on October 1.

She said the SAPS foresees residential burglaries and theft being problematic, because of unemployment and the high influx of people in the precinct.

“The station has already taken action by forming part of the cluster operation that involves the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), liquor board members and other stakeholders. We have increased our visibility and stop-and-search operations. Social crime prevention members are also conducting awareness campaigns twice a week to sensitise community members about crime in the area,” said Const Mashakane.

She advised people to avoid going to ATMs alone and not to accept help from strangers.

She said people can avoid residential burglaries by informing trusted neighbours that they are going away.

“People must know their neighbours and know where a relationship of trust and support can be built. People must also arrange for someone to remove their post from the letter box,” said Const Mashakane.

She urged everyone to be vigilant at all times.

She said crime such as assault increase over the festive season because of people consuming alcohol.

“Awareness campaigns are being conducted where liquor is being sold,” she said.
