Alert workers catch fraudsters

The RCS unit then contacted the rightful owner of the card who alleged it was not the first time his card had been used fraudulently.

An RCS employee working at Macro Meadowdale caught a client committing fraud on October 17.

Bedfordview SAPS spokesperson, Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi, said the woman was working when a customer bought a large amount of liquor using an RCS card.

She took the card and ID document to verify the customer’s details when she noticed the ID document was fraudulent.

She contacted the RCS fraud unit to confirm the owner of the card. The RCS unit then contacted the rightful owner of the card who alleged it was not the first time his card had been used fraudulently.

The culprit was arrested and charged with fraud and is due to appear in the Edenvale Magistrate’s Court.

In separate, unrelated, fraud incident, a woman was on duty at the ABSA Bank in Bedford Centre when she discovered another instance of fraud.

The employee was approached by a man who requested to open an account. As per procedure she requested his ID document to verify his details, upon which it was established that the ID document was fraudulent. The man was arrested immediately for fraud. Police are investigating the fraud and the suspect will be appearing in the Edenvale Magistrate’s Court.

Communities are cautioned to be certain that they are in possession of their debit cards as well as their ID documents to prevent being victims of these types of incidents.
