Mistaken identity leads to muso being shot

Bedfordview police mistakenly believing him to be the kidnapper.

Award-winning hip-hop artist Khuli Chana is recovering at home after being shot and wounded by police in a case of mistaken identity on Monday morning in Midrand.

Chana, whose real name is Khulane Morule, was shot and wounded by police at the Caltex garage on New Road, along the N1 freeway in Midrand.

This comes after a case of kidnapping occurred in Bedfordview, with the offenders demanding a ransom from the victim’s family. Money was supposed to be dropped off at the petrol station in Midrand and Mr Chana’s vehicle matched the description of the kidnappers’ vehicle, resulting in the Bedfordview police mistakenly believing him to be the kidnapper.

According to the Bedfordview SAPS’ Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabati, “A house robbery occurred at a townhouse in Talisman Road, Bedfordview. Four armed men in black reflector jackets, claiming to be police officers, held the residents hostage on Sunday. The men proceeded to steal what valuables they could find and then fled the scene with the homeowner as a hostage. The thieves called later that night, stating they wanted a R100 000 ransom for the Bedfordview resident.”

“The exchange was supposed to occur at the Midrand Caltex petrol station. Bedfordview undercover police officers mistakenly identified Chana as one of the kidnappers. One suspect has since been arrested and a case of house robbery, extortion and kidnapping has been opened,” said Sgt Nhlabathi.

Mr Chana has opened a case of attempted murder against the officers and the circumstance surrounding the incident is being investigated.
