Park upgrade nears completion

The project should have been finished in October this year, but there was a delay in an approval of the water licence from the National Environment management.

Ward 20 Councillor, Clr Michele Clarke, is hopeful for a December finish for the rehabilitation project of Oriel Park.

“The project should have been finished in October this year, but there was a delay in an approval of the water licence from the National Environment management. We are busy with the final phase of the Oriel Park project. The council and the contractors involved in the upgrade couldn’t work in the waterway until the water licence was approved and this postponed the upgrading of the stream. However, the other parts of the construction have been finalised,” said Clr Clarke.

“The water licensing delayed the project by about five months, but the water licence was received at the end of August and now the contractors are hoping to finish the project by December 16, when the workers go on holiday. Despite the landscaping part being underway along with the final phase at Oriel Park, the landscaping part of the project will continue into the months of January and February,” added Clr Clarke.

Culverts and pipes for the storm water drain system have been laid from Plantation Road to Oriel Park in a bid to upgrade and rehabilitate the park.

“The Oriel Park project has been a massive undertaking for the past three years. The project has also provided a good source of employment for the construction workers because the same contractors are dealing with other road upgrades happening in the area. Because of this, we have workers from the Expanding Public Works Programmes that have had a working opportunity for a number of months now,” said Clr Clarke.
