Work on Bedfordview roads continues

An extra lane is being added to AG de Wet, close to the Kloof Road intersection.

Ward 20 councillor, Clr Michele Clarke, said road upgrades in Bedfordview will be finished before the end of the year.

The intersection of Van Buuren Road, Townsend Street and Riley Road had to be lined up.

“This intersection was dangerous as it was unclear which cars had to go first. Now it is going to be a clear four-way intersection with new traffic lights,” she said.

She said she had received many complaints from motorists saying the intersection was unsafe.

“Now it will be user-friendly and a lot safer for both pedestrians and motorists,” she said.

Clr Clarke said the latter intersection and the AG de Wet and Kloof Road intersection upgrades were delayed by service providers.

An extra lane is being added to AG de Wet, close to the Kloof Road intersection.

“In both intersections, work had to be halted as the contractor discovered various service lines, like telephone and electricity lines. The contractor had to wait for the service providers to remove their lines before the work could continue,” said Clr Clarke.

She added that contractors are not allowed to remove service providers’ lines.

“They do not have the technical capacity. Their competency is building roads,” she said.

Clr Clarke added that the service providers have been notified.

“After the work at AG de Wet is done, the fencing of the Bill Stewart Nature Reserve will be finalised,” she said.

  1. I dont think the extra lane at Kloof coming down AG De Witt is going to change anything at all – if anything the problems are getting out of the slip rd at Solheim as well as trying to get out of Kloof Rd safely and turn right onto AG De Witt – these are the two places all teh accidents happen at on this stretch. Not sure what the point on the extra lane into Kloof is?
