Scrap metal worth millions recovered

The suspect's three accomplices managed to escape.

The Bedfordview SAPS arrested three men and discovered scrap metal worth more than R2-million on Wednesday last week.

Bedfordview SAPS communications officer, Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi, said security guards at a heavy metal company, near the intersection of Essex Road and Gross Avenue in Elandsfotein, cornered an intruder shortly before 6am.

The suspect’s three accomplices managed to escape.

“The man tried to hide on the roof of the company but was arrested when the police arrived. Further investigations led us to a scrap metal dealership in Primrose. The owner of the dealership and his assistant were arrested for being in possession of suspected stolen property,” said Sgt Nhlabathi.

The owner of the heavy metal company positively identified some of his belongings which were stolen during a previous break-in at the dealership.
