Joyride ends in flames

It is estimated the youngsters were driving at around 90 km/h through the suburb moments before the accident occurred.

A teen’s joyride could have ended in tragedy on Friday when the car they were driving collided with a street pole and burst into flames.

It is believed that the car, a high performance BMW 5-series, had five occupants in it at the time of the accident.

When authorities arrived, only the 18-year-old driver and one friend were left at the scene; neither were injured.

The accident occurred on Vermeulen Road in Eden Gardens shortly after 2.30pm.

“Various witnesses said the vehicle was being driven recklessly through the suburb for some time before the accident,” a source close to the NEWS said.

“We have been told the driver was executing doughnuts at intersections and also at Surprise Park,” he said.

According to eyewitnesses, the lads were still wearing items of their local high school uniforms.
