Joe Slovo Drive plagued by smash and grabbers

Apparently the perpetrators wait for the traffic to slow down and then strike when they spot something valuable in a car.

Joe Slovo Drive has a reputation for being a smash-and-grab hot-spot.

Last week, the EXPRESS reported on two men who were arrested for being in possession of car-breaking implements. Police officers noticed the men were loitering on the road, went to question the men and discovered the implements in their possession.

Apparently the perpetrators wait for the traffic to slow down and then strike when they spot something valuable in a car.

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department’s (JMPD) spokesperson, Superintendent Edna Mamonyane, said motorists need to avoid becoming victims.

“Perpetrators of this crime have the eyes of an eagle, when they see valuables in the car they strike at lightning speed,” said Sup Mamonyane.

She said motorists need to put their valuables in the boot of their car. “When there is nothing for them to take, they will not bother,” said Sup Mamonyane.

The Yeoville SAPS said it was aware of the problems on Joe Slovo Drive.

“The incidents occur during peak hours of traffic in the morning and in the afternoon. We do deploy our members to the road to monitor the people who normally walk between cars pretending to be selling something,” said Constable Thabo Malatji of the Yeoville SAPS.
