Airport robberies down

It seems the number of incidents of people being followed from the airport has decreased.

According to Bedfordview, Cleveland, Jeppe and Edenvale SAPS, incidents have not been reported since July.

The NEWS questioned SAPS about these robberies following the arrest of three suspects on July 20 in Bedfordview. The suspects in this case were linked to a case involving former minister, Mr Jabu Moleketi.

“The former minister and his son were robbed in the driveway of their residence on Frances Street, Observatory after returning home from the airport,” said Constable Thabo Malatji of the Yeoville SAPS.

There had been reports of similar incidents in surrounding areas prior to the July 20 robbery.

“However, no other incidents were reported since July. It was previously reported that a national task team had been appointed to deal with the robberies,” said Const Malatji.

In June and July, the NEWS, reported that as many as two incidents a week, were reported to Bedfordview SAPS.

Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi from Bedfordview SAPS, said the number has since decreased.

“We have not had any reports or arrests since July. We increased our patrols to make sure things remain that way,” said Sergeant Nhlabathi.

The Cleveland SAPS said officers opted for a pro-active approach.

“We warned hotel and guest house owners in the area and crime intelligence is doing their observations from the airport,” said Const Mpho Mashakane of the Cleveland SAPS.

Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts of the Edenvale SAPS said no incidents have been reported recently in Edenvale.
