Drug dealers cracked

Police were praised after a major drug bust in Malvern recently.

Police officers seized drugs to the street value of about R500 000 on September 19.

Constable Mpho Mashakane, Cleveland SAPS communications officer, said the West Rand Organised Crime Unit received information about a gang, two men and three women, selling drugs.

“Police officers followed up on information that led them to Ernest Oppenheimer Avenue in Bruma. They saw five people in a car. The police officers searched the occupants of the vehicle and found two bags containing a white powder. The powder was tested and it was discovered that it was Tik,” said Const Mashakane.

Questioning led to the suspects taking the police officers to a house in Pandora Road in Malvern.

More drugs, such as cocaine, were found.

The suspects, between the ages of 32 and 48, were arrested.

Earlier this year, Mr Godfrey Mothibe, the chairperson of the Cleveland Community Police Forum (CCPF), said areas such as Malvern and Bruma were of huge concern.

He said Malvern was a drug distribution point and called on authorities outside the precinct to help.

Mr Mike Spadino, chairperson of the Malvern United Community Forum, also called on authorities to crack down on drug dealers in Malvern.

He believed the suburb was neglected and questioned why areas such as Eldorado Park received the attention other residents were also pleading for.

His frustration came soon after President Jacob Zuma’s visit and call for action in Eldorado Park after residents demanded action from authorities. Mr Spadino said that although Cleveland SAPS was visible and doing a great job, they needed help from officers outside the precinct because they are known by criminals in the precinct making it difficult to make arrests.

Last week Mr Spadino said, “I am ecstatic that arrests were made. Police officers are working in Malvern and doing a great job. I hope they continue making arrests and clean up this suburb.”

Mr Rob Crawford, chairperson of the Sector 2 Crime Forum, also called on authorities outside the precinct to take action in Bruma on numerous occasions.

Last week he said this is the first time in years that a major bust had taken place.

“I hope this arrest is one of many to come. Authorities need to bring down the king pins,” he said.
