Another drug arrest in Bruma

One man was arrested in Bruma by the Cleveland SAPS for the possession of drugs on September 13.

Constable Mpho Mashakane, the Cleveland SAPS communications officer, said police officers were patrolling the suburb when they saw a man behaving suspiciously.

They stopped, searched the man and found dagga in his pocket.

He was arrested and detained at the Cleveland SAPS.

Const Mashakane said the Cleveland SAPS has beefed up its operations to tackle drugs in Bruma, especially in Ernest Oppenheimer Avenue.

Earlier this year, the EXPRESS published an article stating that drug sales seemed to be booming in Bruma.

Some people were even using arts and crafts shops as a front to peddle drugs. Some of the drug dealers approached just about anyone and offered drugs. They also smoked dagga openly.

Although marijuana is the most commonly sold drug sold in the area, users can also buy cocaine, heroin and magic mushrooms.

The drug dealers keep little, if any, drugs on them. Instead, they hide the drugs in bins, under bricks, at parking lots and other nearby secret locations.

Runners make their way to these spots to pick up what they need.

Hand signals are also used to communicate, or buyers can openly ask for their drug of choice. Last week, Const Mashakane said the Cleveland SAPS is making in-roads.

“We have increased our patrols and stop-and-search operations in the area. These operations have yielded positive results. There are more arrests now than there were before,” she said.

Const Mashakane said there are still people using an arts and crafts shop as a front to sell drugs.

“It is still difficult to arrest all of them because they do not keep the drugs on them. However, we have put measures in place to deal with this challenge,” said Const Mashakane.
