Department gets proactive and tackles issues

Several service delivery complaints were addressed and action was taken against people contravening the bylaws in Observatory recently.

Clr Carlos da Rocha, of ward 66, said he asked for a walkabout with urban inspectors a few weeks ago.

“I called the meeting to highlight my concerns and that of residents in the suburb. People are concerned about problems with infrastructure, long grass, leaking pipes, bylaw infringements and so forth. When we went on the walkabout, the urban inspectors and I took photographs of problem areas. The urban inspectors sent it to the relevant municipal-owned entities and an operation was held soon after,” said Clr Da Rocha.

The operation was held in conjunction with the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), Pikitup, City Parks, Joburg Water and other departments.

During the operation, workers started replacing damaged infrastructure, such as manhole covers and broken water pipes.

Clr Da Rocha said the work was not entirely completed on the day but work will continue.

“Workers also addressed illegal dumping and people who damaged pavements. Notices were issued against people who contravened the bylaws. If this type of operation had to take place at least once a month, the area would be clean and people would stop contravening the bylaws. The operation had a great impact on Observatory. I will request more operations of this kind,” said Clr Da Rocha.
