Bogus water meter reader robs resident

A Bedfordview resident was robbed by people posing as water meter readers on Friday, September 6, around midday.

Bedfordview SAPS corporate communications officer, Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi, said a woman was called by her gardener, who told her someone was at the gate.

“The man at the gate told the woman he was from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) and that he was there to read the water meter. She told him she would go inside to fetch the keys. The man gave her a cell number to call when she came to open the gate. A few minutes later, when she went back to the gate, she called him and the man said he would be back in 20 minutes,” said Sgt Nhlabathi.

When the woman returned to the house, she was confronted by two men armed with firearms.

“The men ordered her to cooperate and show them her valuables and the safe. She showed them where the jewellery was and told them she did not have a safe. The men took her to the bathroom, where her domestic workers were guarded by another two men. The men locked them all in the bathroom,” said Sgt Nhlabathi.

The men fled the scene in the victim’s BMW X5.
