EMM takes Eastgate

The whole of Eastgate will now fall under Ekurhuleni.

This was confirmed by Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s (EMM) spokesperson, Mr Samuel Modiba.

Mr Modiba said the Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) is finalising the process of the demarcation change.

“The Section 21 notice for Eastgate shopping centre is part of a technical process by the Municipal Demarcation Act, on an already agreed upon outcome by EMM and CoJ. These changes were agreed upon by the two municipalities as far back as 2004, but the matter was not finalised legally,” said Mr Modiba.

The part of the shopping centre with a petrol station and a parking lot will be affected by the new changes.

“The CoJ will no longer be burdened with the relatively trivial issues affecting the shopping centre. For example, land use changes like rezoning will be handled by Ekurhuleni only. This will improve service delivery by Ekurhuleni without having to consult the CoJ,” said Mr Modiba.
