Local officers take top awards

Two Edenvale police officers took top honours at the 2013 Gauteng Prestige Awards on Saturday night last week.

Head of Edenvale’s Crime Prevention Unit, Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts, was awarded the Gauteng Province’s Best Unit Commander award.

Reservist Warrant Officer, Ivan Goldblatt, was the first runner up in the Best SAPS Reservist category.

Now in its 10th year, the awards recognise the men and women in blue who go beyond the call of duty to ensure the safety and well-being of their community.

This year’s ceremony was attended by provincial SAPS commissioner Lieutenant General Mzwandile Petros, and the SAPS’s national commissioner, General Riah Phiyega.

Member of the Executive Committee (MEC), Ms Faith Mazibuko, was also present to hand over awards.

Lt Gen Petros applauded the efforts by police officers over the previous financial year, which saw a marked decrease in Gauteng crimes.

He said the SAPS ship is on-course and officers need to continue their focus on the safety of all Gauteng’s citizens.

Station commander for the Edenvale SAPS, Colonel Sam Maredi, said the station was proud of Lt Col Roberts and W/O Goldblatt.

“The awards show the outstanding work these two officers do for their community,” said Col Maredi.

He added that Lt Col Roberts and W/O Goldblatt have put Edenvale on top as one of the most recognised stations in Gauteng.

“W/O Goldblatt, as a volunteer to the SAPS, has shown his dedication to the community time and time again,” Col Maredi said.

He said that between the two officers, they have made the most arrests in Gauteng.
