Lost ID results in huge debt

Residents are urged to report lost identity documents.

This plea comes from the Bedfordview SAPS corporate communications officer, Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi, following reports of a woman who had lost her ID at Bedford Centre in August 2011 and found that she owed money to banks.

“In July 2013, she received a statement that she owe a bank nearly R28 000. She also found out she had opened a smart account at another bank. She claimed to know nothing about any of the accounts,” said Sgt Nhlabathi.

He added that it is important to report a lost ID as soon as possible.

“It is important that as soon as you notice that you have lost your ID to report it. Failing this, you may find yourself financially responsible for things you know nothing about. The longer you take to report it, the more time there is for fraudsters to use it,” he said.

He added that lost documents, like IDs, can be reported to the police or Home Affairs.
