Rape stats shock

Child Welfare South Africa (CWSA) is appalled at the number of brutal rapes, particularly of children, and is calling on communities to help protect them.

As the biggest umbrella body for the welfare of children in the country, CWSA is concerned at the number of rapes taking place and the scars it leaves behind.

“The protection of our children is of critical importance, as they are the most defenceless victims. CWSA is concerned with the protection of children. We believe we all have a part to play in working together to protect children,” said Ms Trix Marais, CWSA’s national executive director.

CWSA urges communities to be vigilant, and for adults to pay careful attention to the children under their care and supervision.

Family members can also commit sexual crimes, therefore parents and guardians are urged to be attentive in their child-minding.

CWSA has run national programmes, educated and worked with communities, enabling them to identify children at risk and placing them in safe houses.

People are encouraged to volunteer to be trained to assist social workers in the prevention and management of child abuse.
