Metro saves on salaries

Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s (EMM) cost of remunerations decreased this quarter but the metro's overtime bills increased.

This has been attributed to vacant posts within the municipality.

During the council meeting last week, it was stated that the metro saved 9.17 percent, R420-million below the budget.

It was stated that the process to fill these posts is underway. According to the metro, the positions will be filled by those

who are motivated by the departments. In addition, the filling of those positions would have to be in line with the metro’s review of the structure for each department.

Independent Rates Payers Association (IRASA) chairperson, Clr Izak Berg, said the metro should hire new staff.

“The filling of these positions will help the metro save money because it will spend less on overtime and the departments will run efficiently,” said Berg.
