Motorists urged to be aware

Driver killed when car overturns.

Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) has warned motorists about people placing stones on the N3.

This follows the death of a motorist on Friday after 10pm on the N3 South, just after the Geldenhuis Interchange, after his vehicle hit a stone and overturned.

EMPD’s media liaison officer, Inspector Kobedi Mokheseng, said the man was flung out of the vehicle and other cars drove over him.

“The vehicle rolled continuously. There was a woman passenger in the car and the Jaws of Life was used to free her from the wreckage. She is in hospital in a serious condition,” Insp Mokheseng said.

“The driver drove over a rabbit-sized rock placed in the second left lane. He lost control, crashed into barriers and the car rolled,” Insp Mokheseng said.

He added that SAPS and EMPD are having on-going joint patrol operations along the freeway following this incident.

“There are reports that people are deliberately putting stones on the freeway. We are not sure yet of their motive but we have leads that we are following,” he said.

He urged motorists driving on the N3 to and from Bedfordview and Edenvale to be cautious when driving, especially in the evening.
