Overwhelming response to Mandela Day initiative

Staff at Jeppe High School for Girls had an overwhelming response to their request from pupils before Mandela Day.

In preparation for Mandela Day, staff asked pupils to spend 67 minutes spring cleaning at home to collect any unused items for donation to underprivileged and needy children.

On Mandela Day, the contributions made by the girls were awe-inspiring. The girls donated a variety of items which included books, stationery, clothing, toys, non-perishable foods, sanitary items and toiletries. The collection of items were sorted and put into piles to differentiate which items would be suitable for the different institutions.

The donations were taken to Ethembeni, Epworth Home, Uitkoms Home for Girls, Eyethu Centre, Strathyre Girls’ Home and Bienvenue.

On Mandela Day grade 12 pupils, Candice Jacobs and Ursula Ngale, said, “Nelson Mandela once said what counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”

Ms Carole Heming, public relations officer for the school, said, “We spent our 67 minutes spreading smiles and giving back to our communities. Mandela Day has always been a celebration of the selflessness and kindness of our former president. We hope our own contribution reflects the kindred spirit of Madiba and shows how he has inspired our girls. We are proud and thank everyone for their charitable contributions.

“We thank the staff for their flawless organisation and efficiency. The whole Jeppe family wished Madiba a happy 95th birthday and saluted him for his sacrifice.”
