Wheelchair bound woman burns to death

Son tries to save mother from burning house.

A 90-year-old wheelchair bound woman was burnt to death and her son sustained severe burn injuries when their house in Avondgloed Road in Klopperpark was burnt down on Sunday, July 21 just before 2am.

Bedfordview SAPS corporate communications officer, Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi, said that the woman’s neighbours heard a loud bang coming from the house.

“The police officers who were patrolling the area also saw the house on fire and called for help. They then went to investigate. The man was rescued and the woman was certified dead on the scene,” Sgt Nhlabathi said.

Sgt Nhlabathi could not confirm the cause of the fire.

“The preliminary investigation suggests that the fire started from inside. We are also investigating if gas was part of the cause,” he said.

Sgt Nhlabathi added that the woman’s son was injured while trying to save his wheelchair-bound mother.
