JMPD officer crashes into hawkers

A Johannesburg Metro Police officer lost control of his vehicle, crashed into two vehicles and two hawkers on the side of the road, injuring both of them and hit a street pole.

The incident occurred in Raleigh Road in Yeoville on July 15.

“The officer cannot recall what happened, he blacked out when the incident occurred,” said Superintendent Edna Mamonyane, spokesperson for the Johannesburg Metro Police Department.

Crowds gathered around the accident scene as people felt the ambulance was taking too long. People hurled abuse at the officers who were on the scene, accusing them of having double standards.

“If my car had to be impounded, the tow truck would have been here ages ago,” said a man at the scene, who wished not to be named.

The injured were taken to hospital. The officer has since been discharged from hospital.

“As a department we have requested an internal investigation and after we have a medical report, we will determine if the officer is fit to get on the road again,” said Superintendent Mamonyane.

Raleigh Road was closed as the police tried to gather evidence as to what had happened.
