In June, customs officials from the South African Revenue Service (SARS) prevented 22 kilogrammes of cocaine from entering the country.

Customs officers often receive vital training with the Endangered Wildlife Trust based in Modderfontein.

In all cases, the drugs seized and individuals involved were handed to the SAPS for further investigation.

In one of the cases for June, six kilogrammes of cocaine was found hidden in the luggage of a female passenger travelling from Sao Paulo to Windhoek via Johannesburg.

One-and-a-half kilogrammes of cocaine was found in a bodywrap of another female passenger travelling from Sao Paulo to Johannesburg.

Customs officials also prevented 24 174 Viagra tablets, valued at over R2-million, from entering South Africa.

In most of the cases tablets were found in parcels sent from India to South African addresses. This included one shipment of 17 594 tablets worth R1,7-million.

Customs officials also prevented over 100 kilogrammes of dagga, valued at over R150 000, from leaving the country.

Officials also seized a number of other items coming into the country, including two snakes, native to the USA, found abandoned in toilets on the incoming side of the Kopfontein Border Post.

The snakes have been handed over to the SPCA.
