Clarke calls for action after cable theft

Ward 20 councillor, Clr Michele Clarke, called on Ekurhuleni's executive mayor, Clr Mondli Gungubele, to investigate cable theft by contractors.

This follows the arrest of two employees of a company that is contracted by Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) to upgrade several roads in ward 20 as well as a major storm water protection project currently in its third phase in the Oriel stream.

“We cannot be spending millions of Rand of public money on projects when the very contractors’ employees become the alleged perpetrators of crime.  We have, on so many occasions, discussed the screening of contractors as well as their employees when appointed by council to do large projects,” she said.

Clr Clarke thanked Metro Police for it’s quick response which resulted in the arrests.

“I would personally like to commend Senior Superintendent Deon Singh and his team for this well-executed operation. From the time I received the tip-off and contacted Supt Singh, it took only 90 minutes for his team to investigate the site and to make the arrests. This is what I call excellent community co-operation, starting with a reliable lead from a concerned citizen, the police taking my call and information seriously, and ending with arrests made,” she said.
