Employees of EMM contractor nabbed for cable theft

Two employees of a company contracted to Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality were arrested this afternoon when they were found in possession of an aluminum cable stolen from Sinclair Road in Bedfordview earlier this week.

The cable, already partly stripped of aluminum, was found stored in the company’s yard in a park on Homestead Road, Bedfordview.

Bedfordview ward councillor, Clr Michelle Clarke, was informed of the suspected theft and she immediately called the EMPD Germiston Crime Prevention Unit.

“Metro police found the aluminum-laden cable stashed away in the company’s container. The site manager pointed out two of his colleagues who he said had taken the stolen cable to the yard. It emerged that the cable was stolen in Sinclair Road where the council-contracted company is upgrading the road,” said Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department’s spokesperson, Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago.

Clr Clarke commended EMPD members on their swift response, the recovery of the stolen cable and the arrest of the two suspects.

The two suspects, aged 27 and 37, were taken to Bedfordview Police Station and are expected to appear in the Edenvale Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, July 5.
