Chinese CPF not happy with police conduct

The Chinese Community Police Forum (CPF) voiced its concern following the arrest of a member for possession of abalone on June 28.

Constable Mpho Mashakane, Cleveland SAPS communications officer, said members of the Germiston Organised Crime Unit received information from community members about a person being in possession of abalone in Janelia Street in Cyrildene.
Police officers went to a property and asked to search the men and the property. They found boxes and buckets full of abalone. Both men were arrested, she said.
Mr Anderson Lee, the chief executive officer of the Chinese CPF, confirmed that one of the men arrested is a member of the forum. He said the second person arrested is the members worker.
I went to the property on the day the arrests were made. Our member was renting his property to someone. His son owns the property behind his. Police officers went to this house and found that it was empty. They saw the worker who was busy with construction on our members property. They approached him and the worker contacted our member. Abalone was found on the property. Our member was questioned and he showed them the lease agreement between him and the tenant. The tenant was not there. The owner and his worker were arrested, said Mr Lee.
Mr Lee said that as the Chinese CPF they tried to co-operate with the police officers but he is concerned about the owner of the property being arrested without evidence against him specifically.
I was not satisfied with the way the police conducted themselves. They just arrested the member and his worker, he said.
Const Mashakane said police officers asked the owner of the property and the worker who the abalone belonged to and the men refused to give an answer.
They were also asked to produce a permit allowing them to be in possession of the abalone and failed to do so. This is why they were arrested, she said.
Mr Lee said this incident should also encourage property owners to be wary of who they rent their properties out to. Know who you are renting your property to and do not get involved with the wrong people, said Mr Lee.
