Annual running festival a success

"During the festival you create very strong relationships with the other runners."

Runners from across the globe gave it their all at the annual Running Festival of Johannesburg, at the Modderfontein Sports Complex, recently.

Mr Stefan Roodt, one of the organisers, said the Johannesburg festival, which started in 2011, is one of two events internationally which have a 10-day run.

He said this year’s event drew 40 participants.

Over the 10-day period runners had the opportunity to take part in:

Mr Roodt said the event began on December 7 to accommodate the 10-day race, which only happens every two years.

Runners from Australia, Argentina and Israel took part alongside South African runners.

“During the festival you create very strong relationships with the other runners,” said Mr Roodt.

According to him, the greatest challenge for runners is the heat, disrupted sleep patterns, a lack of sleep as well as irregular eating patterns.

He said the participants help each other out.

“Everybody was safe during the event and nobody quit due to injury.

“We are all like family and we encourage anyone who enjoys running to participate in future festivals.”
