Building a future for bowls

"The JBA wants to establish more practice hubs in the district, we want to promote the sport to all ages."

The Johannesburg Bowls Association (JBA) is trying to increase the number of young players in the sport of lawn bowls.

In order to do this the JBA has established a number of training hubs to attract new players.

On Saturday, September 17 at the Jeppe Quondam bowling greens, Ms Cindy Hoffman of the JBA held a training day for youngsters interested in the sport.

Ms Hoffman, who usually holds the training session at Wanderers, said because of logistical issues she decided to start hosting the training club at the Jeppe Quondam Bowls Club.

Her first training session at Jeppe Quondam was held on the weekend of September 10.

She said the aim of this initiative is to get more people involved in the sport.

“The JBA wants to establish more practice hubs in the district, we want to promote the sport to all ages,” said Ms Hoffman.

She said the Johannesburg hubs have been going for a while and hopes that by introducing a hub to the East Rand the sport will grow.

“The aim is to get schools on board. The JBA would love a school league,” said Ms Hoffman.

At the September 10 training Ms Hoffman said she had about 10 youngsters interested in the sport.

She said because of students’ commitments to part time jobs as well as it being prelim time the attendance had dropped at the second training.

“The initiative is going well,” said Ms Hoffman.

At the September 17 training Ms Hoffman said that two of the girls practising already play bowls.

Ms Hoffman said Sabrina Cagnazzo played bowls in Kensington and Shannon Davies played bowls in Randburg.

Ms Hoffman said the young bowls players are looking forward to an upcoming bowls tournament which be held in Bloemfontein around April/March next year.

She said that the youngsters are practising so they can be part of the squad that competes.
