SAPS hands out roses to women

"The response from the community was fantastic,"

A women-only team from the Edenvale SAPS was out in full force on August 5, conducting a roadblock where they handed out roses to women outside Greenstone Shopping Centre.

The National Women’s Day initiative, organised by the head of the Edenvale SAPS Social Crime Prevention unit, Sergeant Jacob Mashile, was held at entrance one of the shopping centre.

“The objective of the initiative was to celebrate womanhood and pay tribute to the unbreakable spirit of women across the country,” said Sgt Mashile.

Members of visible policing (vispol), the Edenvale SAPS Detective Services and administrative services also handed out pamphlets to passing community members.

The pamphlets contained information about domestic violence.

“The response from the community was fantastic. Most of the women who were stopped at the roadblock were happy to see the SAPS,” said Sgt Mashile.

He said the members from the SAPS were happy to be part of the initiative.

“The day was a success,” said Sgt Mashile.

Captain Jean Olckers, the spokesperson for the Edenvale SAPS, said the event was held to promote women’s rights and show the support of the Edenvale SAPS for women who are victims of crime.
