“The ESP team shone brightly as we had 15 newbie’s competing in their first championships."

Twenty-four clubs from Gauteng competed in the first Ekurhuleni District Winter Short Course Championship on July 23.

The two day regional championship saw Edenvale swimmers competing in the event.

“Several swimmers from ESP swam all 10 events and made it to the finals for many of them,” said ESP coach Ms Liz Humphrey.

She said the ESP team won 11 gold medals, three silver medals and 12 bronze medals.

“All the winter training has paid off. ESP has scored high in recent events but this is the first win in decades,” said Ms Humphrey.

“The ESP team shone brightly as we had 15 newbie’s competing in their first championships,” said Ms Humphrey.

She said Kyle McKenzie, Ashleigh Stock and Savannah Mitchell were the stars of the team.

Savannah made it to the finals in all eight of the events she entered, winning six gold, one silver and one bronze medal.

She now has five Senior Short Course times under her belt, having swum the 100m breaststroke in 1.17:84 and 100 butterfly in 1.08:02.

Savannah also qualified in the 50m butterfly and breaststroke events. Previously, she qualified in the 200m breaststroke.

Kyle, a breaststroke and individual medley swimmer, posted a time of 1.03:34 for the 100m Individual Medley and 2.14.88 for the 200m Individual Medley.

Kyle qualified for all 10 finals, winning three gold, one silver and one bronze medal.

Ashleigh Stock reclaimed her breaststroke title and won a total of two gold medals.

Jessica Burgess won seven bronze medals and one silver.

Bernalee Doster won two bronze medals and Colette Fourie won one bronze medal.
