Cycling for charity

There are about 2 000 diseases that are classified as rare diseases in South Africa.

Scores of cyclists supported the inaugural Caxton Cycle Race last weekend.

The Caxton Cycle Race took place on Saturday, October 17, in Modderfontein

The race was organised by Caxton East Rand and was led by the Kempton Express, Bedfordview and Edenvale News and Germiston News.

Its aim was to raise funds for Rare Disease South Africa.

Ms Toni Randall from Rare Disease SA said the organisation provides advocacy for rare diseases in the country.

“This includes finding funds for research about diseases and promoting awareness about them. We also help the patients with medical aid issues. We support those families affected by rare diseases and also do research about the diseases diagnosed,” she said.

She said there are about 2 000 diseases that are classified as rare diseases in South Africa.

She said a lack of awareness is killing many people.

“The lack of awareness is the main challenge. There are many people who are sitting with symptoms and do not know them. They sometimes find out too late. Sometimes people have to go to many doctors before they are diagnosed correctly,” she said.

Ms Anneli de Klerk, from Caxton, thanked the participants and the sponsors.

“I am thankful there were so many cyclists here, doing it for the good cause. It means there are good people out there. People who are willing to cycle just for charity. I also feel enriched for being part of this,” she said.

Sponsors of the day included Pick n Pay Edenglen, 7 Eagles Spur in Greenstone Shopping Centre, Liquor City Stoneridge, Oosthuizen Traders, Sterling and Jewelers, Emperors Palace, Good Night Linen, Maxis, Arwyp Medical Centre, and Juice Traders and Charisma Hair.
