Saheti winter fest a hit

Saheti School's 11th annual primary school winter sport festival took place on June 6.

Saheti School’s annual primary school winter sports festival took place on June 6.

This event, which is in its 11th year, is the highlight of the primary school’s sporting calendar.

More than 800 players from 12 schools participated in soccer and netball matches throughout the day.

Players competed in U/10 to Open age groups, in a round-robin format.

Each team was scheduled to play nine games and the festival ran like clockwork.

The players enjoyed themselves as intended by the festival’s organiser, Ms Kirsty Forssman.

Mr Brett Nicolson, who is the Saheti Primary School’s vice principal said, “We are on a drive to give sport back to our children. The focus of this festival is on participation, sportsmanship and enjoyment. Coaches, referees, umpires and parents are there to provide strategy, skills training, guidance, encouragement and support. The players get to play lots of games, practice the skills they have learnt, and develop confidence, courage, perseverance and flair. Too much pressure, too much criticism, too much direction from coaches and too strong an emphasis on results will inhibit growth. It is gratifying to see the support from the schools who participated with us in the festival.”

The trophy for the Best Netball School was awarded to Laerskool Jan Celliers.

The gold medal winner in the Open age group was Saheti School, while Hurlyvale Primary School took silver.

The trophy for the Best Soccer School was awarded to Bishop Bavin School.

The gold medal winner in the Open age group was Saheti School, while Summerhill Primary School took second place in the same category.
