A swimming weekend for local water babies

Kyle McKenzie had a perfect debut and scored 58 points. He won four medals after swimming in six finals.

13 swimmers from Edenvale’s Aquatic Academy recently participated at the SA Level 1 Regional Championships.

Almost 800 swimmers from 69 clubs from as far north as Kenya and Tanzania took part in the event.

The local club achieved 21st position overall, with 132 points

Kyle McKenzie had a perfect debut and scored 58 points. He won four medals after swimming in six finals.

He also received a Level 2 qualification.

Kyle won silver medals in the 200 metre breaststroke event, the 100 metre breaststroke event and the 50 metre freestyle events.

He also won a gold medal in the 50 metre breaststroke event.

Jonathan Smith swam in six finals and won three medals to also qualify for Level 2.

Jonathan won a bronze medal in the 50 metre backstroke event and two silver medals in the 100 metre and 200 metre backstroke events.

Clayton Malaza narrowly missed medalling, however he did qualify for Level 2 and swam in four finals.

In the girl’s events, nine-year-old Caitlin Stott swam in one final for the 10 and under 50 metre backstroke event.

Caitlyn qualified with a Level 2 time.

Level 2 times are set for swimmers 11 years and older.

Keara Bothma swam in two finals while Dylan Clark qualified in fourth place for a final in the 50 metre butterfly event.

Nine-year-old Ethan Heystek was selected as the second reserve in the 100 metre butterfly event.
