ERC lends a hand to local hospice

"The ERC looks forward to providing much needed assistance in the future."

Sister Leigh, of Edenvale Hospice, hosted members from the Edenvale Rotary Club (ERC) on February 6.

At the meeting, she spoke to the Rotary Club members and provided them with information about the centre.

Secretary of the ERC Ms Linda Clarke said the ERC has supported Edenvale Hospice for a number of years by donating mealie meal.

In 2005, Sister Leigh, a retired ICU sister, took over the running of the Hospice facility.

Ms Clarke said at that time it was a Care Centre for Aids and TB patients only.

Since then, with the assistance of the department of health, Sr Leigh has changed the centre into a Hospice facility.

Ms Clarke said the Hospice now cares for individuals with various conditions, including cancer, TB, renal failure, fatal heart conditions, diabetes and patients who have suffered strokes.

Ms Clarke said because of the support from local business and community members, patients at the Hospice are only charged R300 per month.

This amount includes medication, food and nursing care.

“Sister Leigh’s talk was extremely enlightening and the ERC looks forward to providing much needed assistance in the future,” said Ms Clarke.
