Rowland Home residents get a special treat

Residents of Colonel Rowland Home for the Aged, Deaf and Blind, in Bedfordview, got a treat from ward 20 councillor and business people in the area.

Ward 20 councillor, Clr Michele Clarke said that there was a braai for the residents and they also received a goody bag with toiletries.

“Residents here need any help they can get. We asked them what would they want to celebrate Mandela Day. They said that they wanted a braai. That is what we are giving them.

“Local businesses and local residents contributed to make this day a day to remember for the residents,” she said.

She called on all people to visit the home when they have time.

“You do not have to have a lot to give to these people. They are always willing to accept someone with a friendly smile in their home. Some of the residents are able to communicate with other people by reading their lips when they talk,” Clr Clarke said.

She added that her visit and support for the home will continue after July 18.

“We will come to the home now and again. We will help where we can on an on-going basis,” Clr Clarke said.

Ms Jennifer van der Westhuizen from Eastgate Checkers Hyper said her store sent its deaf staff with other staff to visit Colonel Rowland Home.

“A number of deaf staff decided to visit the home to spend some time with the residents, hand over gift hampers containing sponsored items and provide a festive lunch for the residents to enjoy. Our aim was to spoil the residents and remind them that they are significant to the community,” she said.
