Local breast cancer survivor gears up for challenge

Zwane will be participating in the 10km events in Tshwane on August 25 and in Johannesburg on September 24.

Breast cancer survivor Nono Zwane and Mrs South Africa semi-finalist 2024 is gearing up to tackle the Absa Run Your City series, in hope to raise awareness and funds for the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa).

Zwane will be participating in the 10km events in Tshwane on August 25 and in Johannesburg on September 24.

“Being diagnosed with Stage 2B breast cancer was the most devastating news I ever received. I was filled with confusion and overwhelmed by what could happen or what was about to be my life.

“I never thought it could happen to me let alone to someone close to me,” stated Zwane.

She first felt a lump in her breast. However, an early mammogram came back clear.

“There was no sign of anything. A little while after that appointment, I felt what I thought was a boil under my arm and didn’t pay any attention to it,” she said.

“I started feeling a little pain on that boil and the lump on the breast.

“I called the radiography department, where I did my mammogram because I was starting to get worried and they told me that I should go to my GP to examine me.

“If there was something, the GP will refer me to them to do a sonar,” added Zwane.

She underwent a rigorous treatment regimen, including 16 rounds of chemotherapy, a partial surgery to remove the affected area, and 30 rounds of radiation.

Her participation in the series is a testament to her commitment to spreading awareness about cancer and the importance of early detection.

“I was overwhelmed with fear when I first heard the diagnosis. Cancer felt like a death sentence.

“But I was blessed to be on a spiritual journey that helped me navigate this difficult period. My advice to everyone is to be vigilant about changes in your body and get screened regularly.”

The funds raised through her participation will help ensure that no one faces cancer alone.

The upcoming events offer a chance for the community to join Zwane in her mission.

Participants are encouraged to sign up and support the cause.

By joining the run or donating online, supporters can contribute to the vital work Cansa does in providing lifelines to those affected by cancer.
