Titans wins baseball league

The delighted team celebrated their league win with a sponsored braai from Birchwood Spur.

Edenvale’s Titans have won the Senior Reserve Baseball League.

The hotly contested final match of the league was played at the Giants/Imps grounds in Edenvale on August 4 and saw the local favourites face-off against long-time rivals Randburg Mets.

Mets opened the batting and brought home two runs.

Titans were determined to not fall behind on the score board and in the bottom of the first innings brought home two runs to tie the results before a pick-off and a strike out sent the team back to the dug-out.

At the top of the second innings a two base hit from Mets brought in a total of four runs.

Once again level the score, Titans set out determined and also brought home four runs.

With the score once again tied at six runs a piece, the Randburg Mets set their sights on glory in the third innings.
Their efforts saw the visitors bring home six runs.

Titans were however well-prepared for the fight ahead and took one step ahead by bringing home seven runs including a home run.

This saw the Titans take the lead for the first time in the game.

In the fourth frame batting innings from the Mets, the Titans players secured two quick strike outs to limit their rivals to only one run home.

Titans then took to the diamond again and brought home a stellar nine runs to take a 22 – 13 lead in the league final.

With time running out in the game all players knew that one more frame would secure a legal game.

Mets, however, tried to slow game play down hoping that the clock would run out before their next batting innings.

Titans sacrificed two runners on base through strategic walk-offs and took the field with less than one-minute left in the game.

This move ensured that the game was legal and forced Mets to don their helmets for another batting innings.

Titans made quick work of the three batmen in the batters box to claim their first Senior Reserve League title in many years.

With the league title in hand, Titans set out to also secure the cup win in the Senior Season Cup and Plate play-off which began on August 11.

For their first round game Titans were selected to play against Cobra’s Red from Bosmont.

The game was played in Edenvale.

Opening the batting after a coin toss Titans took to the diamond and brought home five runs.
The Bosmont visitors replied with only one run in.

The second and third batting inning from the Titans each brought in two runs to bring the home-side’s total to nine.

Despite their best effort the Cobras Red were unable to secure and runs for their efforts at bat.

At the top of the third frame, Titans brought home another three runs before sending the visitors in again for another fruitless attempt at scoring.

At the top of the fifth frame, Titans brought home another two runs to further extend their lead.

During their turn at bat, Cobra’s Red only managed to bring home one run.

The final frame of the day saw Titans smash Cobras Red for nine runs to bring their total to 23.

In reply the Bosmont side brought home one more run to bring their game total to 3.

Cobras Red now head into the plate play-off while Titans have secured their place in the Cup play-offs for the 2023/2024 season.
