Watch and Listen: Meadowdale blaze spreads to recycling plant

Neighbouring businesses evacuated.

A fire that began in a field in Meadowdale has since spread to a local recycling plant, causing extensive damage and even negatively impacting on air traffic.

The blaze has engulfed the plant and affected neighboring businesses, which have had to evacuate.

Clr Kade Guerreiro announced that efforts to control the fire are in progress, including a request to Kelvin Power Station to shut down one of their lines to support firefighting operations.

 

As of 19:00, Eric Maloka from DEMS confirmed that the fire remains active. Four fire trucks from Ekurhuleni, along with additional units from OR Tambo Airport, are on the scene working to combat the flames.

Emergency services, including EMPD and paramedics, are actively engaged in controlling the situation.

Residents are advised to stay away from the area and report any emergencies to 112 or 10177.

Smoke from the blaze is negatively impacting on air traffic.
