Edenvale volleyball referee makes strides on the field

The 20-year-old embarked on his refereeing career last August last year and shows no signs of slowing down.

Edenvale’s Andre Nsenga transitioned from being an average volleyball player to discovering his passion as a referee.

The 20-year-old embarked on his refereeing career last August and shows no signs of slowing down.

He was introduced to the game as a player but said he never got any good at it.

“There was an open position for a referee, and at the time, I wasn’t doing anything, and that’s when my friend suggested I try it out.

Volleyball referee Andre Nsenga encourages people to support the sport.

“I was discouraged at first because I wasn’t that good as a player and thought I had to know a lot to start refereeing.

“It was challenging at first, but I have since become better at it,” he said.

He underwent a basic training programme before being appointed.

His dream is to one day referee at the Olympics and feature on Bay Watch 2.

“As a referee, I feel like I hold the power. I decide what goes on. It is an easy and fun sport.

“Regardless of age, men, women, and children can enjoy it. It is not always intense,” he said.
