Clr Jill Humphreys dreams big for 2024

Humphreys’ vision for 2024 is to see Bill Stewart Nature Reserve and Morninghill Koppie converted into conservancies that will be enjoyed by the entire community.

Following a challenging 2023, Ward 20 Clr Jill Humphreys has shared her vision for 2024 and beyond.

Starting with recycling, Humphreys says the landfills are full.

“There is a need to throw everything in the bin and expect it to be carted ‘away’. Where is ‘away’?

“Our society’s requirement for convenience demands that our detritus has to occupy a pristine piece of earth every time a landfill closes down,” she said.

Adding that the circular economy, which people tend to agree is the best way to survive the ever-burgeoning population growth, requires that residents re-use, re-purpose, re-invent, recreate and re-gift as much as possible.

“Including water but that’s another story. However, convenience, time constraints and instant gratification trumps all of those.

“The first prize for recycling in Bedfordview would be separation at source of wet and dry waste.

“If all organic waste was immediately separated in the home, there would be no smelly bins and no leachate.”

She said every kitchen should have a little counter container to take all the kitchen waste removed daily to an outside bin or composting receptacle.

“This could be removed weekly by private operators and composted or could be composted on site if space allows.

“Ideally, our cities should undertake to do these separated collections and composting. Thereafter, most of the dry waste is recyclable, imagine the reduction of waste to landfill!”

Bill Stewart Nature Reserve and Morninghill Koppie:

According to Humphreys these two areas, still sporting some Bankenveld grasses, need to be converted into conservancies for their protection and enjoyment by the community.

She said regarding the Kiddie Bike Park, the ‘skeleton’ of this little facility is still in evidence next to the Bedfordview Library.

“I fondly dream of it being reinstated with its roads freshly painted, the stop signs and robots fixed, the garden tidied up and perhaps a little business opportunity on-site with refreshments for moms, dads and caregivers,” she shared.
