Edenvale’s Tails and Whiskers Charity Shop gets ready for 8th birthday

“But to make the surprise possible we need the support of the community."

In preparation for its eighth birthday, Tails and Whiskers Charity Shop is appealing and challenging the community for donations.

The birthday event will be held at the shop on November 11.

Shaaron Blackwell, cofounder of the shop said this will be the first real celebration of the store’s birthday.

Fellow co-founder Renee Rossolimos said previously no celebrations were held as the duo just worked past the date and remembered it a few days afterwards.

“On the day we have a massive surprise in store for the community which will benefit our three beneficiaries.

“But to make the surprise possible we need the support of the community,” said Sharon.

The charity shop’s beneficiaries include Boxer Rescue, Edenvale Ferals and Helen White in the Community.

Additionally, with December around the corner, Tails and Whiskers hopes to get a head start on collecting and selling donations to further assist its beneficiaries.

“We all know that animals suffer during December and January.

“People go on holiday or move properties and in some instances abandon their pets,” said Sharon.

She said the funding raised from the sale of donations assists beneficiaries with food, veterinary and other additional costs.

The challenge

Renee said this year the shop’s birthday motto is ‘Turning your donations into cash for the birthday bash”.
As such, the shop challenges all residents and businesses alike.

Sharon said because the store is turning eight years old, each member of Edenvale’s households is challenged to donate at least eight items.

The duo hope that by doing this, a parent of a household may find eight, or more, items they are willing to donate and then challenge their child who may challenge their sibling to do the same.

Sharon said the charity shop is looking for household donations of all kinds ranging from kitchenware, appliances, tools, toys, clothes, electronics, collectables and anything else community members are willing to part with.

Sharon said the shop now also has a volunteer, equipped with a bakkie who can collect large donations.

Appealing to businesses she encouraged them to look in their storerooms for any old stock which could be resold at the shop.

She said businesses who contribute to the birthday will be acknowledged for their support.

“Donations from businesses, especially local businesses really assist us and grow connections in the town,” Sharon explained.

Memorabilia

Sharon said something which has occurred frequently in recent months is the charity shop receiving high numbers of old keepsakes and memorabilia from the elderly.

“Some of these people don’t want to just throw these items away and instead give them to us.”

Sharon said with the high number of keepsakes from yesteryear received, the shop intends on keeping as many of them as possible, putting them on display.

Sharon said by doing this the memorabilia and those who donated it will always form part of the shop.

Community members who would like their keepsakes to be kept and remembered at the store can do so by contacting the charity shop.

Donations can be made at the charity shop located on Third Street between Van Riebeek and Eighth avenues.
