Saheti learner earns national colours for chess

Chess prodigy Mila Papanicolaou made her mark at the International Youth Chess Championships.

Mila Papanicolaou, a Grade Four learner at Saheti School, has made her mark on the international stage of chess by earning her national colours.

Mila represented South Africa at the International Youth Chess Championships in Batumi, Georgia.

Her journey towards this achievement started in September 2022, when she was selected to represent Johannesburg Metro in the national tournament in December and secured a top-two finish.

Being placed in the top three of this event was a prerequisite for her selection to participate in the National Closed Tournament.

After finishing in the top two, it guaranteed Mila to be selected for the national team.

She achieved first place in this tournament and represented South Africa, placed as board 1, at the International Youth Chess Championships.
