Ekurhuleni district celebrates women empowerment in style

“Women should work hard so that should there be posts in the organisation, they can apply, and their CVs would speak for themselves."

The Ekurhuleni district policewomen switched their blue uniforms for elegant evening wear to celebrate Women’s Day at AFM Church on August 25.

The SAPS Employee and Health Wellness (EHW) for Women’s Day empowerment organised the occasion.

Under the theme ‘Oh women, your mental health matters’, the event aimed to appreciate female leaders.

Ekurhuleni district commissioner, Major General Anna Sithole, expressed her appreciation for female leaders in the police.

She said she was proud that the EHW honoured her as their district’s commander.

Among the sponsors were Polmed, Sanlam, Afro Centric and more.

Sithole said women should constantly self-develop themselves by attending the organisation’s courses and upgrading their qualifications.

“Women should work hard so that should there be posts in the organisation, they can apply, and their CVs would speak for themselves.

“They should acquire experience in different components within the organisation.”

She further urged women to step out of their comfort zones and always be willing to take risks.

“I had to take risks. I applied to the Free State province for my development and growth. From there, I climbed up the ladder to where I am today.”

She encouraged women to learn to let go of toxic relationships affecting mental health.

“Women tend to hold on to toxic relationships, then end up in abusive relationships or body bags.”

According to Sithole, it was crucial that such events empowered women.

Ekurhuleni Men for Change were also there to show support.

“I want everyone to climb the ladder. I want other women to hold on to me so that they climb the ladder and join us.

“The organisation we are under is very strenuous. We deal with criminals, and sometimes you go to work and don’t come back,” said Sithole.

She said it was vital for women to live a balanced life and take care of their mental health.

“We plead with women to use the resources they have at SAPS. They consist of social workers, pastors and all. Women should consult and ease the burdens they have.”
