Mandela Day to benefit local senior citizens and youth

“Our food garden programme has benefited 66 families.”

Malibelinye Community Service works with young people in Dukathole informal settlement.

Alex Xakambana, a former Ward 35 councillor, directs the organisation.

They will have a Mandela Day celebration on July 18, where 100 elderly persons will receive food parcels and blankets, and young people will receive reusable sanitary pads.

Although the organisation started in 2019, it was first registered in February this year.

“Among the various initiatives we have undertaken since 2019 are a community pageant, a soccer competition, a garden and skill-building programmes.

“The goal of the pageant was to inspire and empower young girls. We contacted businesses to provide bursaries to the winners. Covid-19 halted the plan,” said Xakambana.

“Our present focus is on skill development, and we have trained young people for two months in domestic appliance maintenance and a six-month solar design programme.

“Community members, companies, and Chinese organisations have shown support. In the past, we gave five schools sanitary pads and uniforms. A 5km race was organised to raise money for the donation.

“Our food garden programme has benefited 66 families,” said Xakambana.
