Locals support Cansa at a shavathon

Community members came out in their numbers to support the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) at a recent shavathon.

It was hosted by Dros Eden Meadows on March 11.

Marlene Capazovio, of the restaurant, said cancer is something close to her heart.

“I lost my brother to cancer three years ago and my oldest brother is a cancer survivor. We just thought that we have the space, we have the venue, so let’s host a shavathon.”

Although Cansa hosts its shavathons on the last weekend of February, corporates can host shavathon events throughout March.

Marlene describes the response to the event, sponsored by Property Professionals, as being great.

During the shavathon, a mother and daughter cut off and donated their ponytails in honour of their father and grandfather who had died from cancer.

She said with families attending the event and making a day of it the event was enjoyed by all.

Speaking to Edenvale resident Kayla Earle, who cut off her ponytail to honour her father, she told Bedfordview and Edenvale News that her father died from cancer when he was 30 years old.

“As I am turning 30 this year, I thought it would be a nice way to give back and just help those who are suffering from the disease. It is something very close to my heart.”

Kayla said once she decided to donate her ponytail her daughter decided to follow suit.

Although she donated her hair, Kayla said it wasn’t an easy decision.

“I’ve had long hair for 12 years but there are a lot of people struggling and it is a horrible disease, and this is my way of helping where I can.”

Kayla said it was lovely to see the community come out to support the event.

Marlene said the restaurant hopes to host more community-centred events.

She said in the coming months it plans to host blood drives in partnership with the SA National Blood Services every two months.
