Alleged illegal miner arrested in Bedfordview during police operation

The suspect was charged with possession of a suspected explosive connector and dangerous weapon (knife).

One illegal miner was arrested while the rest fled the scene during a police search on November 18.

Police collaborated with the Blue Hawks Tactical and Aviation members to conduct a joint operation around the Bedfordview area with a focus on Klopperpark, Elandsfontein, Turney and Senderwood hotspots.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Lillian Modiga explained what led to the arrest.

“We went to do an observation at an abandoned mine shaft.

On arrival, we found a group of zama zamas who managed to escape but we were able to apprehend one suspect.

“The suspect has since been detained at the station for further investigation.”
