People who abuse animals should be jailed because the fine punishment isn’t effective.

Some people passing by discovered the kitten which had been spray painted blue, had injuries to the head and paws, and burns on its ears. A glue gun had also been used on her.

The kitten found in Bedfordview is slowly recovering.

The residents contacted Susan Harmse who works with the Friends of the Cat, an animal rescue NPO.

According to rescuers, the kitten was screaming as it seemed to be in a lot of pain.

She was then taken to the Bedfordview Veterinary Hospital for medical assessment by the Recycle 4 Rescue organisation.

Harmse is urging cat owners to sterilise their pets.

“This would not have happened if people were sterilising their cats.

“The law must also change. People who abuse animals should be jailed because the fine punishment isn’t effective.

“And such people mustn’t be allowed to own pets,” she stated.

She is pleading with anyone who might have witnessed the incident to come forward as a case was opened with the SPCA.

Kaylene Ferreira, acting chairperson for the Recycle 4 Rescue, said there’s been a trend of animal abuse of late in the community.

“Last year we took in a puppy whose owner tried to chop off his tail, the bone was sticking out.

“We rescued, sterilised and adopted a young girl doggie who was found with heavy chains around her neck.

“We have tried to intervene when people sell puppies that are way too young.

“There is a misconception that breeding puppies to sell is a good way to earn a living. These dogs can end up as bait in dog fighting,” explained Ferreira.

The NPO recycle glass to pay for sterilisations at various veterinary hospitals. They also depend on fundraising events to raise capital.

They help with the pets of those who can’t afford to sterilise them.

“We assist with food, beds, blankets, vaccines, medical care and education, etc.
