Residents Action Group (RAG) has issued this warning.

“Based on RAG’s recent experiences and discussions on crime trends with the SAPS, our area is seeing a huge spike in such crimes,” said RAG general manager Mark Morris.

He added that serious crime does appear to be under control.

“There has been a marked increase in online fraud and social media scams.

“So be vigilant when it comes to buying and selling of vehicles and other items online and via social media,” Morris warned residents.

He said that there have been cases of criminals using counterfeit money to pay for goods being sold online as well as sending through false proof of payment to sellers.

Another scam involves fraudsters advertising vehicle sales on social media.

They reportedly claim that there is so much interest in the vehicle that the seller should transfer a deposit into their bank account to secure the sale.

“Once the money is paid, the “seller” disappears.

With the rise in motor vehicle theft in the area, Morris advised residents to ensure that their vehicle is fitted with a tracking device.

“For vehicles that are most commonly targeted by criminals, including hijackers, two tracking devices are recommended,” he said.

Morris added that residents should be cautious about where they park.

“Ensure that your vehicle is parked in a secure, well-lit area when you go out. Before you walk away, make sure that your car is locked. Do not leave valuables in the car, especially not visible to anyone who may look into the vehicle,” he said.

Morris urged residents to always report suspicious persons or vehicles to their security service provider and SAPS immediately.
